Smelters are used to process raw ore into metallurgic goods. Unlike other buildings like the Assembler, the Smelter does not require a crafting recipe to be set before it can be used. You or a loader can add any item that is Smeltable, which is indicated in the item's tooltip.

Inserting any different smeltable item will automatically make the Smelter adjust to the new item, but its output inventory needs be empty before it can start to process the newly inserted item.

Note: Before you can use the quick-insert button on the machines screen panel, you need to manually insert the first item by using the Manage Inventory button (or by loader).
