Cargo ships are currently the only automated transport system in the game. They unlocked through the "Cargo Ships" tech located after Science Pack IV. The start pad allows you to fill a ship with 10 slots of any item for transport, the destination can also be set at the control panel for the building using the destination's name that you set in the Cargo Ship Target Pad this will link these two pads and they will continually load and offload materials for as long as they are provided.
Functionality
Cargo ships have two variants of pads. The Cargo Ship Start Pad and the cargo ship target pad the target pad is used as the name suggests as a destination for your start pads. It is worth noting that multiple start pads can share a target pad however while one cargo ship is on route to that target pad all other cargo ships using that landing pad will not take off until the cargo is unloaded and the pad is empty again.
Notes
While these are an attractive alternative to long belt highways be aware that the throughput of cargo ships is heavily varied based on distance to and from their respective pads so this may not be a viable option for larger bases or if you intend to use them you may have to use many of them. It's recommended to generally avoid the method of using a single landing pad for a lot of start pads, generally keeping this at two start pads and one target pad is the ideal ratio.
