The Ore Scanner is a hand-held tool used to scan the immediate vicinity for resource deposits. Only know ores are detected by the Ore Scanner: initially only Xenoferrite and Technum ore are known and additional resources are revealed through research. Additional resources include the following.
The player starts the game with this equipment. The scanning function is superseded in the mid game by the construction of the Long Range Scanner building, although the Ore Scanner will continue to be useful for scanning Ore Veins for 
Ore Vein Miner placement.
The Ore Scanner is operated by equipping it and then activating it using the LMB. Revealed resource deposits are superimposed briefly over the landscape and once detected appear in the Map.
