The Boiler uses water and a fuel to create steam. This steam is then used in a Steam Turbine to produce power.
The usable fuel types are:
- Biomass (5MJ)
- Ignium Ore Rubble (10MJ)
- Ignium Ore (12.5MJ[1])
- Portable Fuel (16MJ[1])
- Ignium Fuel Rod (400MJ[1])
- Coked Ignium (5.5MJ)

Water Use
Each Boiler requires an input of 20 Liters per second (L/s) of Water from a port on either side. The ports are bidirectional, meaning you can input water via a Pipe on one side and output excess water to another Boiler on the other side, daisy chaining them together. You can place them directly adjacent or use a Pipe to connect.
Water is obtained by submerging a Pipe Intake in a body of water and connecting a standard Pipe. A single Pipe Intake provides 30,000 Liters per minute (L/min), or 500 L/s, meaning each Pipe Intake can max support 25 Boilers running at 100% capacity.
A Pipe Network's max capacity is 36,000 L/min (600 L/s), so two Pipe Intakes would be required to max out the Pipe Network capacity to increase total Boiler maximum to 30 Boilers.
With the new Complexity concept for Pipe Networks introduced in Update 2, each Boiler adds 5 complexity (equal to its width) to the Pipe Network it is attached.
Fuel Use
Each Steam Turbine requires 60 Litres per second (L/s) of steam to operate at its maximum output power of 3.6MW. A Boiler is capable of supplying 60L/s of steam, so for every Steam Turbine, you only need one Boiler.
The Boiler requires 3.6MJ/s to achieve this and the below table outlines the different fuels and their burn rates to maintain 360L/s of steam.
| Fuel | Burn Time | Items Per Minute | Output |
|---|---|---|---|
| Biomass (5MJ) | 1.39s | 43.2 | |
| Ignium Ore Rubble (10MJ) | 2.78s | 21.6 | |
| Ignium Ore (12.5MJ) | 3.47s | 17.3 | |
| Portable Fuel (16MJ) | 4.44s | 13.5 | Barrel (Empty) |
| Ignium Fuel Rod (400MJ) | 111.11s | 0.54 | Fuel Rod Casing |
| Coked Ignium (5.5MJ) | 1.53s | 39.3 |

Notes
Despite having a lower energy value than Ignium Ore, Coked Ignium is produced at a ratio of 2:5 and therefore has a slightly better energy value per mined unit of Ignium.
